VCON 28, Vancouver, Canada

October 10 -12, 2003

Lynda attended VCON with Virginia O'Dine, a new friend and supporter who will be helping with promotion for the first Okal Rel universe writing contest, among other things.  Virginia is an improv artist and runs her web services business, Design Universe, single handed.  Panels that Lynda took part in discussed: ways of focusing mankind on survival beyond any one lifetime or business year, whether we have dangerously overdosed on dark anti-heros, and how to make an culture alien without alienating the reader.  Lynda bought some neat pipe-cleaner creatures at the art show and admired but restrained herself from buying a picture of a newly hatched dragon on a pebbly beach.  Virginia spent time getting to know the people behind Neo-Opsis, a new Canadian sci-fi magazine based in Victoria.  Lynda donated an Okal Rel T-Shirt to the con organizers, sold some books thanks in part to the generosity of Eileen Kernaghan in sharing space on the Neville Books table, and discussed the con biz with Randy McCharles.   Lynda enjoyed meeting VCON president Paul Carpentier, guest of honour Nalo Hopkinson and fellow workshop pro Janet Waters.   Spider Robinson was sighted more than once but no engagement. Didn't even get a picture.   Oh well, next time. :-)

Lynda also hung out at the SF Canada room one evening and signed up as a paid member. And last but not least, she ran into Bobbie DuFault of the RFF (Readers for the Future).
