Perry, Poetry by Character Amel, Okal Rel Universe

introduction

A lyric portrait of Amel's Demish mekan'st, Perry D'Aur, written in English but mimicking the revered Demoran tradition of painting a portrait of the beloved in words, which captures his or her essential nature. While the atypical earthiness of the setting and sexual connotations gently mock the more sugary Demoran form, no lack of affection for the subject is projected in the subject matter of the poem.

Boots at the foot of a Demish quilt, caked in shit.
Windows wide to the sun.
Clouds muscle their way across the view raining
on wrecked equipment in the yard making cold
oily pools.

Breakfast rattles in the kitchen sausage smells
prodding through the old board floor, crying
wake for it is well past dawn.

She sleep on her stomach, dough pale across the hillside
of her back ending in sunburn on all fronts.
Grease reek in her stiff hair. Muscles pulled.

My hands wake her. Not for breakfast.
She wakes with the ordinary glory of the sun.

commentary

Perry is, at core, a middle-class Demish conservative, but winds up being the rock on which an unorthodox alliance of Demish, Vrellish and commoners is founded..

A nobleborn "dark Demish" by birth (e.g. Demish who has enough Vrellish blood to affect her coloring), she becomes Amel's mekan'st early in the series. Although intermittently together, and seldom the other's principle concern, Perry and Amel sustain their relationship through all nine books.
