Plastic vs. Metal as Cheap Building Material in ORU

Lynda's notes (Jun 18, 2001) summary of conversation with Alison

Would cheap Gelack tables be plastic? I cast my mind back to my undergraduate chemistry days and realized it wouldn't be in keeping with the "organic = precious" and "inorganic = cheap" rule. This is because life is rare in the universe and hunks of rock and minerals plentiful. Space travel is not expensive - except in as much as Sevolite labor is required - but mining operations would have a bearing on the economics of extracting metals. Gelion itself has minerals and metals but almost no life, making even mining relatively cheap. Gelacks do have considerable expertise in re-cycling, however, so some plastic - particularly of the "thermoplastic" sort - if I understand the implications for recycling properly - would be in evidence.
