Readers for the Future packs up

From: Dave
Subject: [RFF/DYR/CEC team] So long RFF Utah
To: RFFDYRCEC@yahoogroups.com
Date: Tuesday, January 5, 2010, 3:47 AM

We would like to thank everyone who has offered their generous support to RFFUtah over the years.

In the current economic environment, RFFUtah, like many other small organizations, finds that it can no longer continue to offer significant contributions to those institutions and organizations whose efforts are directed at promoting literacy and reading.

Therefore, it is with regret that we have made the decision to discontinue operations effective January 1, 2010 due to a lack of critical resources.

We encourage you to direct your attention and support to local schools, libraries and organizations who support literacy and reading.

Any questions may be directed to rffutah@rffutah. org

RFF Utah Homepage revamped

Readers for the Future have a new web page up. David Glenn Anderson is the ORU connection with them. I also web published my short story Angela's Wisdom through them. That was back when I was teaching computer science and Angela was struggling to learn to read. Now she's 16 and disappears for days at a time reading the Twilight books by Stephanie Meyer. Delighted that she also likes the Okal Rel Universe stories, too.

David-Glenn Anderson meets Lynn Perkins at Philcon

Recent e-mail from Dave Anderson (aka David-Glenn Anderson) tells me he's met Lynn Perkins, artist for Part 3: Pretenders and Part 5: Far Arena, at Philcon. I'd sent Dave a package of ORU goodies for Philcon.

Detail from Duckon homepage 2008
Below is how Dave Anderson explained the Golden Duck nomination to EDGE publicist Justyn Perry. The award is given out at Duckon June 13-15, 2008.

"Righteous Anger is being considered for Hal Clement (Young Adult Award) This award is named after Hal Clement, the pen name of Harry Stubbs, who was a well known science fiction writer and science teacher. He helped children's science fiction programming wherever he went and was an all-round nice guy. The award is for science fiction books of grades 6-12 that have a young adult protagonist. The science should be as correct as possible, but still a good story. - DGA Feb 08"

The excitement in Horth's life spans his teenage years, starting at eleven years of age, although he is physically an eighteen-year-old at that age being as Vrellish as he is. The Vrellish grow up fast, physically. I guess a lot of kids these days feel they've grown up fast, too, where sex and violence are concerned.

Delighted to tell the world ORU books and buttons were distributed by Charlie Harmon at the educators' conference Life, the Universe and Everything this month and David-Glenn Anderson distributed 25 copies of the Worlds of Lynda Williams CDs which contains classroom exercises featuring the ORU. I can't thank Charlie and DGA enough and hope classes and educators will continue to add material of their own to the CD to increase its utility to their peers.

Worlds of Lynda Williams CD

Worlds of Lynda Williams CD

Here's a scan of the cover of the Worlds of Lynda Williams CD created by First Expansion member David Glenn Anderson. The picture of me is in the background is rather out of date but entirely right for the period of my most creative phase of invention in the Okal Rel Universe. I lived in the ORU then. I hope it brings others as much pleasure, for a moment now and then, through the books.

David Glenn Anderson entry on ORU Concordance

Much thanks to David Glenn Anderson, First Expansion member of the ORU, for his work on the Worlds of Lynda Williams CD for distribution to SF-keen teachers. Visit the ORU Concordance to read the entry in the screenshot, above. (Nov/07 PS the typo in the concordance has been fixed! It's Glenn not Glen.)
